چکیده

a-l-Fetoprotein (AFP) was measured in the sera of 5 hepatoma patients following total hepatectomy and orthotopic liver transplantation. Immunosuppressive therapy, rejection episodes, and infection did not alter the serum level of AFP. Low AFP levels persisting posttransplantation indicated the presence of slow-growing residual tumor in 3 patients. A sharp increase in serum AFP levels preceded clinical evidence of rapid tumor growth in 1 patient. Disappearance of AFP in 1 patient who is still symptom-free after 9 months suggests little or no residual tumor. Serial AFP levels can be helpful in assessing the results of therapeutic attempts in patients with liver carcinoma.

Does alpha-fetoprotein contribute to the mortality and morbidity of human hepatocellular carcinoma? A commentary

The fifth most common cancer worldwide is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), while being the third leading cause of global cancer-related deaths. Although HCC incidence is less frequent in North America, it is a common malignancy in Asia and Africa associated with a high rate of mortality and morbidity due to ineffective therapies against cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis. It is well establi...

A case of alpha-fetoprotein-producing esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Alpha-fetoprotein is a well-known tumor marker in the screening and follow-up of hepatocellular carcinoma. In Taiwanese society, a high prevalence of hepatitis and hepatoma and elevation of alpha-fetoprotein associated with liver function impairment usually suggested clinics undertake further examination for liver or genital tumor. We report the case of 45-year-old man who was found to have an ...

Tissue polypeptide specific antigen as a marker used to determine the liver diseases.

BACKGROUND Tissue polypeptide specific antigen and its specific M3 epitope are increased in malignant as well as in some benign diseases. The level of tissue polypeptide specific antigen in serum is related mostly to proliferation capacity rather than tumor mass and cell necrosis. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of tissue polypeptide specific antigen and other tumor...

Diagnosis of hepatoma using grayscale and Doppler ultrasound in patients with chronic liver disease

OBJECTIVE To determine the diagnostic accuracy of liver ultrasound for the detection of hepatoma in chronic liver disease (CLD) patients by either taking histopathology or serum α-fetoprotein levels or a biphasic computed tomography (CT) scan (whichever is available) as the gold standard. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Radiology Department, The Aga Khan University...

Intracellular synthesis of alpha-fetoprotein and fibrinogen without secretion by Zajdela rat ascites hepatoma cells.

Transplabtable Zajdela rat ascites hepatoma cells, previously considered "nonproducers," synthesize detectable amounts of intracellular alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and fibrinogen, but fail to secret or release these serum proteins. Evidence for defective secretory mechanisms for serum proteins in these hepatoma cells (a) explains the failure to detect AFP in either the serum or ascitic fluid of rat...
